Nothing Phone Surfaces on BIS Website, Could Debut as First CMF by Nothing Branded Smartphone

CMF by Nothing — the sub-brand of the UK startup led by OnePlus Co-Founder Carl Pei — is reportedly gearing up to launch its first smartphone. A device with a previously unseen model number has surfaced on two regulatory websites, which suggests that it could be launched soon. So far, CMF by Nothing has launched wireless audio products, a charger, and a wearable fitness tracker. The purported smartphone could arrive at an affordable price point, similar to the recently launched Nothing Phone 2a.

Earlier this week, Android Headlines spotted a new device on an unspecified regulatory website with the model number A015. The publication speculated that the device was the purported Nothing Phone 3, and that it would be launched in the coming months. According to previous reports, the Phone 3 will be equipped with a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip, instead of a flagship grade mobile processor.

Meanwhile, 91Mobiles discovered a listing for a device with the same A015 model number on the BIS India website, which suggests that it could also be launched in India. However, the BIS listing — verified by Gadgets 360 — indicates that the brand name for the device is the sub-brand CMF by Nothing.

Another clue that the upcoming smartphone might not be the successor to the Nothing Phone 2 is the model number itself. The first-generation Nothing Phone and the Nothing Phone 2 (its successor) bear the model numbers A063 and A065, respectively. On the other hand, the Nothing Phone 2a, which was launched at a lower price point, bears the model number A142.

We can speculate that an affordable smartphone from the Nothing sub-brand could compete with handsets priced under the Rs. 20,000 mark in India. The Phone 2a — currently Nothing's most affordable handset — starts at Rs. 23,999 in India, while the Nothing Phone 2 was launched last year with a Rs. 44,999 price tag. We can expect to hear more about the purported smartphone from CMF by Nothing in the coming months.

Google Pixel 8a Retail Unit Spotted Online in Blue and Green Colour Options: See Images

Google Pixel 8a has been spotted online in images shared by a retailer, even though the company is yet to announce any plans to launch the smartphone. The successor to the Pixel 7a is expected to be unveiled by the search giant at its annual Google I/O developer conference next month, before it arrives in global markets. The latest image that has leaked online shows Google's upcoming Pixel 8a phone in two colourways, and the design of the handset appears to be in line with recent leaks.

X (formerly Twitter) user PerOre15 (@Mohamma11824513) leaked an image of the Pixel 8a (via DroidReader) along with the retail box, in blue and green colour options — previous leaks suggest that these colourways are called Bay and Mint, respectively. The latter appears to be a more vivid shade of green than the one on the Pixel 8.

The leaker also claims that the Pixel 8a is already being sold in some markets in Morocco. This is interesting, because Google is yet to share any teasers for the purported successor to the Pixel 7a. Going by the company's launch schedules for last couple of years, we can expect the Pixel 8a to be unveiled by the company in the coming weeks — possibly at Google I/O 2024, which is set to begin on May 14.

According to previous reports, the Google Pixel 8a will be powered by the same Tensor G3 chip that powers the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, with support for 5G connectivity. The smartphone is also said to feature a 6.1-inch OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, an upgrade over its predecessor that was equipped with a 90Hz screen.

Google is also tipped to retain the same camera hardware on the Pixel 8a that was available on its predecessor. This means the phone could feature a dual rear camera setup with a 64-megapixel main camera and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera. Like last year's Pixel 7a, it will support wireless charging and have an IP rating, according to reports.

Apple Offer to Open Up NFC-Based Tap-and-Go Technology Said to Be on Track for EU Approval by May

Apple's offer to open its tap-and-go mobile payments system to rivals is set to be approved by EU antitrust regulators as soon as next month after it tweaked some of the terms, people familiar with the matter said.

Apple's bid to settle the four-year investigation would help it dodge a finding of wrongdoing and stave off a potential hefty fine that could be as much as 10% of its global annual turnover.

Apple's tap-and-go technology called near-field communication, or NFC, allows for contactless payments with mobile wallets.

The European Commission two years ago accused Apple of thwarting competition for its Apple Pay mobile wallet by preventing rival mobile wallets app developers from accessing its tap-and-go technology.

The U.S. tech giant in January offered to let rivals access its NFC on its iPhones, iPads and other Apple mobile devices free of charge without having to use Apple Pay or Apple Wallet, with access based on fair and non-discriminatory criteria.

It also offered to provide additional functionalities including defaulting of preferred payment apps, access to authentication features such as FaceID and a suppression mechanism, and also to set up a dispute settlement mechanism.

Apple was asked to tweak some of the terms following feedback from rivals and customers. The NFC proposal would be for 10 years.

The Commission aims to accept the offer by the summer, with May as the likeliest month although the timing could still change as it waits for Apple to work out the final technical details, the people familiar with the matter said.

The company was hit with a 1.84 billion-euro ($2 billion) fine, its first EU antitrust penalty, last month for thwarting competition from Spotify and other music streaming rivals via restrictions on its App Store.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Spotted in Leaked Hands-On Images Next to iPhone 15 Pro Max

Pixel 9 Pro hands on images have leaked online, giving smartphone enthusiasts an idea of what to expect from the company's next Pixel phone. This year, the company is tipped to launch a third model — the Pixel 9 Pro XL — which means the Pixel 9 Pro won't be the largest handset in the lineup. The purported Pixel 9 Pro is shown with a redesigned camera layout. The handset is also expected to feature a periscope telephoto camera, which is also seen in the leaked image.

Images of the purported Pixel 9 Pro were published by Rozetked (in Russian, via GSMArena) earlier this week. One of the images shows the handset's rear panel, with an oval-shaped camera island. Previous reports have suggested that the Pixel 9 series will drop the 'visor' camera module in favour of a simpler camera island, and the leaked images appear to corroborate those claims.

The publication has also shared an image of the Pixel 9 Pro next to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Readers might recall that the successors to the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are tipped to be smaller in size (like the iPhone 15) compared to last year's models, while the Pixel 9 Pro XL will sport a larger screen, like Apple's top-of-the-line iPhone 15 Pro Max model.

Meanwhile, one of the leaked images shows the Pixel 9 Pro in "fastboot" mode, a part of the bootloader that is used to flash system images on the phone. As per the image, the Pixel 9 Pro will be equipped with 166GB of LPDDR5 RAM from Micron, and 128GB of inbuilt storage.

According to a recent report, the Pixel 9 series and the rumoured Pixel Pro Fold could arrive with support for a Samsung modem with support for satellite communications during emergencies. A recent beta version of the Google app for beta testers appeared to confirm the Pixel 9 series moniker while also suggesting these models will feature a custom animation. More details are expected to arrive ahead of the expected debut of these handsets later this year.
