iPhone 17 Air and Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim Tipped to Get Smaller Batteries than Standard Models

Apple and Samsung are said to be readying ‘slim' versions of their upcoming flagship phones. A tipster now suggests that the purported devices, dubbed the iPhone 17 Air and Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim, may ship with much smaller battery capacities than their flagship equivalents. This move is speculated to be in order to maintain the thin form factor of the handsets. Notably, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to debut in September alongside other models in the iPhone 17 series, and while the Galaxy S25 series is scheduled to launch next week, the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim may have been delayed till May.

iPhone 17 Air, Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim Battery Capacities

In a post on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, Digital Chat Station (translated from Chinese) shared details about the expected battery capacities of the Apple and Samsung phones. As per the tipster, both models will be equipped with batteries in the 3,000-4,000mAh range. The phones are tipped to put their heat dissipation capabilities and battery life to the test with their “ultra-thin” design which could measure between 5.xmm-6.xmm.

Meanwhile, Chinese smartphone makers are expected to launch ‘slim' models of their own and they might have batteries with capacity around 5,000mAh. Recent models launched by OEMs in China have adopted Silicon-Carbon technology that allows them to have better energy density.

However, global giants such as Apple and Samsung are yet to do so, and thus may have smaller battery capacities with reduced screen on-time compared to their standard counterparts.

iPhone 17 Air and Samsung Galaxy S25 Leaks

As per a previous report, Apple's 'ultra-thin iPhone' may measure around 5.5mm in thickness, potentially making it the thinnest iPhone ever built. It is said to lack a physical SIM card slot and only supports eSIM due to its thin form factor. The phone is rumoured to come with a 6.6-inch OLED display with 120Hz ProMotion technology and Apple's Dynamic Island. For optics, it may sport a single 48-megapixel rear camera and a 24-megapixel selfie camera.

On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim (model no. SM-S937x/DS) could have a 6.66-inch display, which should be similar to the Galaxy S25+ model. It is said to feature a 200-megapixel primary camera, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens, and a 50-megapixel 3.5X telephoto camera.

Supermassive Black Hole Flashed Twice in a Rare Event, Scientists Explain the Reason

Astronomers recently observed a rare cosmic event where a supermassive black hole, located approximately 408 million light-years away, consumed one star from a binary system while the other narrowly escaped. This unusual phenomenon, known as a double-flash tidal disruption event (TDE), occurred in the galaxy WISEA J122045.05+493304.7. These powerful events, visible from billions of light-years away, typically involve a single flare, but the designated event ASASSN-22ci is notable for producing two flares, sparking interest in its origins and implications for black hole research.

A Unique Event Observed

According to a study published in the pre-print journal arXiv, ASASSN-22ci was first detected in February 2022, appearing as a typical TDE. However, a second flare was observed 720 days later, making it one of the few documented instances of repeated TDEs.

Researchers theorise this might have resulted from a process called Hills capture, where a supermassive black hole disrupts a binary star system. In such cases, one star is ejected at high velocity, while the other remains bound in an elongated orbit around the black hole, undergoing repeated tidal disruptions.

Investigating the Black Hole's Activity

Data from ultraviolet and X-ray observations revealed the black hole responsible for ASASSN-22ci has an estimated mass of about three million times that of the sun. While the star involved in these flares likely has a mass similar to the Sun, it remains uncertain if it had a companion that escaped. Scientists believe the similarity between the two flares indicates that the same star might have been disrupted twice during its orbit.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Researchers predict a third flare could occur in early 2026 if the star survives another close encounter with the black hole. This anticipated event would provide astronomers with a rare opportunity to observe and study the earliest phases of a TDE in unprecedented detail, shedding light on the mechanics of black hole interactions with stars

Fossils Reveal Evolution of Early Nervous Systems in Ecdysozoans

A discovery has shed light on the early evolution of nervous systems in ecdysozoan animals, a group that includes insects, nematodes, and priapulid worms. Fossil evidence from the early Cambrian Kuanchuanpu Formation has revealed details of the ventral nerve cord structure in ancient organisms, providing key insights into the evolutionary history of this critical component of the central nervous system. This discovery offers a glimpse into the nervous system architecture of one of the earliest known ecdysozoan lineages.

Revelations From Cambrian Fossils

According to a study titled Preservation and early evolution of scalidophoran ventral nerve cord published in Science Advances, scientists analysed fossils from Cambrian deposits, including those of Eopriapulites and Eokinorhynchus. As reported by phs.org, the findings suggest that the ancestors of scalidophorans, a subgroup of ecdysozoans, possessed a single ventral nerve cord. Researchers observed structures along the ventral side of these ancient organisms, resembling the ventral nerve cords of modern priapulid worms.

Dr. Deng Wang from Northwest University and Dr. Jean Vannier from Université de Lyon indicated to phys.org that these impressions represent early examples of the nervous system design seen in present-day ecdysozoans. This evidence supports the hypothesis that a single ventral nerve cord was the ancestral condition for this group.

Implications for Evolutionary Biology

The study has highlighted evolutionary connections between the structure of the ventral nerve cord and the segmentation of body plans in ecdysozoans. According to statement to phys.org by Dr. Chema Martin-Durán of Queen Mary University of London, the findings propose that the common ancestor of all ecdysozoans likely had a single ventral nerve cord. Changes leading to paired nerve cords, seen in arthropods and kinorhynchs, are believed to have evolved independently, reflecting adaptations to segmented body structures.

Dr. María Herranz from Rey Juan Carlos University suggested that the emergence of paired nerve cords may have enhanced locomotion and coordination in segmented animals during the Precambrian-Cambrian transition. These findings underscore the role of fossil studies in uncovering the complexities of early animal development.

Samsung Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+ and Galaxy S25 Ultra Design and Specifications Leak Ahead of Launch

Samsung will launch its next-generation Galaxy S devices — expected to debut as the Galaxy S25 series — on January 22, the company recently announced. Ahead of their anticipated debut, a tipster has leaked the smartphones' renders that showcase some design changes expected to arrive with the newest models. The Galaxy S25 Ultra appears to sport the most noticeable design tweaks, including curved corners. In a separate development, detailed specifications of all three purported models in Samsung's upcoming lineup has also been leaked.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Series Design (Leaked)

Tipster Evan Blass shared the “first official” Galaxy S25 series renders via Substack, and these images suggest the standard model and the Galaxy S25+ will bear a resemblance to their predecessors. There's the camera unit on the back of both smartphones with the same distinct camera rings. Meanwhile, the front has an identical hole-punch cutout for the front camera.

However, that is not the case for the purported Galaxy S25 Ultra. The renders corroborate the previous leaks which hinted that the South Korean technology conglomerate's top-of-the-line Galaxy S model might come with rounded corners, ditching the boxy design that has become synonymous with its ‘Ultra' models in recent years.

New Cartilage Type Found: Lipocartilage Resembles Fat, Boosts Elasticity

A newly identified form of cartilage, distinct from the three commonly recognised types, has been described by scientists. This tissue, termed "lipocartilage," stands out due to its unique composition. Unlike typical cartilage, which features thick fibre matrices, lipocartilage contains balloon-like cells filled with oils. These cells are uniform and closely packed, forming a springy yet durable structure. Found in areas such as the ear and nose, this tissue combines elasticity with resistance to deformation, according to reports.

Study Highlights the Characteristics of Lipocartilage

As per findings published in Science, lipocartilage was first observed during an analysis of mouse ear tissue. This tissue, resembling fat but with a distinct fibrous matrix, was shown to maintain its size regardless of calorie intake. Unlike adipose cells, lipocartilage lacks enzymes for fat breakdown and transporters for dietary fats, ensuring its structural stability. Maksim Plikus, Professor at the University of California, Irvine, compared it to "Bubble Wrap" in an email to Live Science, noting its role in enhancing the acoustic properties of the outer ear by maintaining consistent sound wave transmission.

Historical Observations Rediscovered

The tissue was first documented in the 1850s by Franz von Leydig, who described it as cartilage resembling adipose tissue. Subsequent mentions in the 1960s and 1970s faded into obscurity until its recent rediscovery. The study highlights lipocartilage's distinct genetic and molecular characteristics, supporting its classification as a potential fourth type of cartilage. Some experts, including Shouan Zhu from Ohio University, have expressed reservations, suggesting it might represent a subtype of elastic cartilage.

Wider Implications and Future Research

Lipocartilage was identified in human fetal tissues and several mammals but not in nonmammals. Researchers aim to explore its evolutionary origins, regenerative capabilities, and how it manages high fat content without toxicity. As reported by Live Science, according to Viviana Hermosilla Aguayo and Dr. Licia Selleri from the University of California, San Francisco, this discovery may necessitate updates to anatomy and histology texts.
