Google Pixel 8a Alternatives: OnePlus 12R, Apple iPhone 14, Nothing Phone 2, and More

Google has launched its next-generation Pixel 8a in India. The latest Google Pixel phone brings an interesting set of features and specifications with a special focus on AI. The handset is currently available for pre-order with sales set to begin at 6:30 am IST on May 14. The smartphone will be available for purchase from Flipkart. The Google Pixel 8a is equipped with a Tensor G3 processor, 8GB RAM, and a dual rear camera setup.

Google Pixel 8a price in India starts at Rs. 52,999 for the 128GB variant, while the top-end 256GB option comes with a price tag of Rs. 59,999. That said, in this price segment, we already have smartphones from popular brands like Samsung, OnePlus, iQOO, and more that deliver some true value-for-money proposition, which makes the new Pixel 8a a bit overpriced. If you are considering the Pixel 8a as your next smartphone companion, be sure to check out these alternatives first.

Apple iPhone 14

Apple iPhone 14 is among the best alternatives to the latest Pixel 8a. Although the model is slightly older, getting it at a price of under Rs. 60,000 sure makes it a value-for-money proposition. The iPhone 14 packs a 6.1-inch OLED display that offers 1,200 nits of peak brightness.

It also features an A15 Bionic chipset, which delivers excellent performance. On the camera front, the phone offers a dual-camera setup with a 12-megapixel sensor and a secondary 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor.

Interestingly enough, if you are willing to spend some extra cash, then you can also get the latest iPhone 15 model for under Rs. 70,000 price in the country, which also makes a great alternative to the Pixel 8a.

Samsung Galaxy S23

Samsung's flagship model from last year is also a great alternative to the Google Pixel 8a. The compact flagship smartphone from the company is currently available for under Rs. 60,000 on Amazon and Flipkart, which makes it a worthy rival to the Pixel 8a.

i8i772ag samsung galaxy s23 5g 625x300 30 April

Samsung Galaxy S23 offers a 6.1-inch Infinity O Dynamic AMOLED 2x display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. It is powered by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor coupled with 8GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage.

The phone also packs a punch in the camera department with its 50-megapixel main rear camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 10-megapixel telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom. On the front, you get a 12-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture. The phone packs a 3,900mAh battery and offers 25W fast charging support along with wireless charging capabilities.

OnePlus 12R

The OnePlus 12R is yet another arch-rival of the Pixel 8a. The latest OnePlus smartphone brings some flagship-grade features at a much lower price than the Pixel 8a. The OnePlus 12R price in India starts at Rs. 39,999, while the top-end model is priced at Rs. 45,999, which is still Rs. 14,000 cheaper than the top-end variant of the Pixel 8a.

The phone packs a 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED display with up to 4,500 nits of peak brightness and a 360Hz touch sampling rate. The screen is also protected with Corning Gorilla Victus 2. The handset is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, which delivers flagship performance, along with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

For optics, the OnePlus 12R gets triple rear cameras with a 50-megapixel primary sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 2-megapixel macro sensor. On the front, the phone offers a 16-megapixel shooter with f/2.4 aperture. The OnePlus 12R is loaded with a 5,500mAh battery and offers 100W SuperVOOC fast charging support.

iQoo 12

Moving on, the iQoo 12 is another strong competitor to the Pixel 8a smartphone. The flagship model from the Chinese brand brings all the latest bells and whistles to the table. More importantly, it is still priced evenly with the Pixel 8a. You get the base variant that offers 12GB RAM and 256GB storage for Rs. 52,999, while the top-end variant is priced at Rs. 57,999, which is still lower than the Pixel 8a top-end variant.

On the camera front, the iQoo 12 offers a triple-camera setup with a combination of a 50-megapixel Omnivision OV50H primary sensor, a 50-megapixel ultra-wid-angle lens, and a 64-megapixel 3x telephoto lens. On the front, you get a 16-megapixel shooter for selfies and video calling. The phone is loaded with a 5,000mAh battery with 120W ultra-fast flash charging support.

Nothing Phone 2

Lastly, we have the Nothing Phone 2, which again is a good alternative to the Pixel 8a. The smartphone from Nothing offers a unique design language and a good balance of software and hardware. The phone recently received a price cut, and it now starts at Rs. 39,999 for the base variant, while the top-end variant is priced at Rs. 49,999.

Apple Could Unveil an AI-Powered Photo Editing Feature at the Let Loose Event: Report

Apple is reportedly working on an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered photo editing feature which it might unveil soon. The Cupertino-based tech giant is hosting its Let Loose event on Tuesday, where it is expected to introduce new iPad Air and iPad Pro models and a new Apple Pencil. It is said that during the event, the company might also tease its new AI feature, and then introduce it later in 2024. Notably, Apple researchers have also published a paper on an AI model capable of editing images.

According to a report by AppleInsider, Apple is working on an AI-powered feature dubbed ‘Clean Up' which is said to offer “Photoshop-grade editing capabilities” to users. Citing people familiar with the matter, the report claimed that the feature is currently being internally tested and is designed for the in-house Photos app. It further stated that the feature was being planned for macOS 15, but did not specify whether it would also be available on iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

This feature is reported to be located within the edit menu of the new version of the Photos app. There are three options Adjust, Filter, and Crop, and the Clean Up feature can be found within the Adjust menu. As for what it does, the feature is said to remove background objects from one part of the image, which can be selected using the brush tool. A similar tool is also available in Google's Pixel smartphones.

Interestingly, earlier this year, Apple researchers published a paper titled Guiding Instruction-Based Image Editing Via Multimodal Large Language Models, which mentioned an AI model that can make complex edits in an image with simple prompts and actions. If the report about the Clean Up feature is true, there is a chance it could be based on this LLM.

The report also highlighted that there is a chance that the tech giant could tease this feature during its Let Loose event. This would make sense if the company also intends to release the feature for the iPad. An earlier report mentioned that Apple might introduce the new iPad Pro with the M4 chipset that carries a new neural engine capable of running AI features. The company could also introduce it as an AI device.

iPhone 15 Pro Max Emerges as Best Selling Smartphone in Q1 2024 as Apple, Samsung Dominate Top 10 List: Report

Apple's iPhone 15 Pro Max was the best-selling model in Q1 2024, according to a report by a market research firm. The company's flagship phones reportedly contributed to over half of Apple's sales value in the same quarter. Four of the top five smartphones were from recent iPhone models, and the top 10 bestsellers were smartphones from both Apple and Samsung. Seven out of 10 models were high-end smartphones, while — in a first — all handsets in the list were 5G capable.

The latest Global Monthly Handset Model Sales Tracker by Counterpoint Research shows that Apple's iPhone 15 Pro Max and the standard iPhone 15 model were in first and second place, respectively. In fact, all four models in Apple's latest smartphone lineup were part of the top 10 best-selling smartphone list — the iPhone 15 Pro was in the third spot followed by the iPhone 14, while the iPhone 15 Plus came in eighth.

Just like Apple, South Korean tech conglomerate Samsung also had five smartphones in Counterpoint's top-10 best-selling smartphones list. in Q1 2024, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra was in the fifth spot as the company's top-selling handset. It was followed by the Samsung Galaxy A15 5G and Galaxy A54 in sixth and seventh spots, respectively.

The standard Galaxy S24 model was ninth in the list of Counterpoint's top-10 handsets in terms of sales in Q1 2024. The phone came in behind the iPhone 15 Plus, which was a spot higher, according to the market research firm. The Galaxy A34 is the tenth phone in the market research firm's list of top-selling smartphones.

Apple's iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max offered better hardware compared to the company's standard models, and the differentiation led to more customers picking the high-end models, according to Counterpoint. These include a new Action button, a powerful A17 Pro chip, telephoto camera, and a titanium body.

Similarly, Samsung's Galaxy S24 series of smartphones arrived with new generative AI (GenAI) features such as Circle to Search, Browsing Assist, and real time translation for calls. Counterpoint also notes that premium features like GenAI are expected to feature on more smartphones, as customers are waiting for longer periods before upgrading their handsets, due to limited hardware differentiation.

Apple's 'Let Loose' iPad Event Today: How to Watch Livestream, What to Expect

Apple's first hardware event of the year will be held later today. The digital-only event dubbed “Let Loose" will be livestreamed through Apple's official platforms. As always, Apple has not given any clue about hardware categories that will appear during the event, however, we expect the keynote to announce new products. The main focus of the event could be the iPad models and related accessories. The iPad Air is expected to be unveiled in two sizes and the iPad Pro is anticipated to come with an OLED display and M4 chip.

The Let Loose Apple event is taking place today (May 7) at 7:00am PT (7:30pm IST). It will be livestreamed via the company's YouTube channel. You can also watch it online through Apple's website and Apple TV app.

Specific details about the launch event have not been released yet, but Apple is speculated to focus on iPad Pro and iPad Air this time. The former is expected to bring notable upgrades including an OLED display, an updated M3 chipset, a revamped rear camera module and a landscape-oriented front camera. The new iPad Pro could feature thinner bezels and could come in "glossy and matte screen versions". It could offer MagSafe wireless charging support as well.

The iPad Air is expected to follow dual-size strategy and come in 10.9-inch and larger 12.9-inch screen sizes. It could run on an M2 chip.

Apart from the new tablets, we expect the company to reveal new iPad-related accessories. The event invitation features illustrations and motion graphics of a hand holding a pencil, suggesting the presentation may focus on an Apple Pencil and a Magic Keyboard. The Apple Pencil could include a squeeze gesture feature while the Magic Keyboard might get an aluminium build and larger trackpad.

Apple's next scheduled event will be its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024. It will start on June 10 and Apple could introduce new features and updates for its operating systems during the event.

iPhone 17 Series Said to Get Smaller Dynamic Island; Apple Could Unveil iPhone 17 Slim in 2025

iPhone 16 series is expected to go official in the second half of this year but we are now hearing rumours concerning the next generation of Apple's iPhone lineup. The purported iPhone 17 family is tipped to come with a refreshed design, front-facing camera upgrades, and a smaller Dynamic Island among other improvements. Apple could also introduce a 'Slim' variant with the iPhone 17 series replacing the Plus version. The iPhone 17 Pro models are said to be powered by Apple's A19 Pro chip.

As reported by 9to5Mac, Jeff Pu of Haitong International Tech Research revealed details about the iPhone 17 series in his research note. According to the analyst, the 2025 iPhone family will include four models — iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Slim, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The iPhone Slim model could replace the “Plus” model and offer a “slim design".

The vanilla iPhone 17 is said to get a 6.1-inch display while the iPhone 17 Slim could sport a 6.6-inch display. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are said to feature 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch screens, respectively.

The iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Slim, and iPhone 17 Pro will all have an aluminium design that is “more complex”, adds the report. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is said to get a titanium build and a “narrowed Dynamic Island". To reduce the size of the Face ID sensor, Apple could use “metalens” technology for the proximity sensor in this top-end variant. The other models in the iPhone 17 lineup are said to retain the current design.

Apple's regular iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Slim could run on an A18 or A19 chip with support for 8GB RAM. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are said to be powered by an A19 Pro chip alongside 12GB RAM. This would be a significant upgrade over the current iPhone models. The ongoing iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus feature 6GB of RAM, while the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have 8GB of RAM.

Pu reportedly opines that all four iPhone 17 models will feature 24-megapixel front-facing cameras. Currently, Apple packs 12-megapixel front-facing cameras in the iPhone 15 lineup.

Apple is very consistent with its iPhone release dates. Given that, we can expect the iPhone 17 series to be released in September 2025.
