SpaceX Crew-9 Mission Successfully Docks at ISS: Here's Everything You Need to Know

SpaceX's Crew-9 mission successfully reached the International Space Station (ISS) on September 29, 2024. The NASA astronaut Colonel Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov boarded the Crew Dragon capsule, named Freedom. After launching from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on September 28th, the crew completed a one-day orbital journey before docking at 5:30 PM EDT (3:00 AM IST). Hague is the first active U.S. Space Force member to reach space, further highlighting the significance of this mission.

First Human Spaceflight from Space Launch Complex-40

Crew-9's launch marked a historic moment as it was the first human spaceflight to lift off from Space Launch Complex-40 (SLC-40). Nick Hague and Aleksandr Gorbunov's arrival brings the total number of astronauts aboard the ISS to eleven. However, this mission is also distinctive due to NASA's decision to reduce Crew-9's original four-person roster. Instead, the mission was modified to carry only two astronauts to make room for two astronauts already aboard the ISS who require a return trip to Earth.

Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams, who arrived at the ISS in June on the first crewed Boeing Starliner flight, were originally scheduled to stay for just ten days. However, technical issues with Starliner's thrusters extended their stay on the station.

Preparing for Crew-8's Departure

Crew-9's arrival also marks the upcoming departure of the Crew-8 astronauts, including NASA's Michael Barratt, Matthew Dominick, Jeanette Epps, and cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin. The four, who arrived at the station in March, are scheduled to return to Earth soon after Crew-9's docking process is completed. If everything proceeds as planned, Crew-9 will remain at the ISS until February 2025, further supporting ongoing space research and operations aboard the station.

NASA Hubble Space Telescope Captures a Stunning Spiral Galaxy 45 Million Light Years Away

The NASA Hubble Space Telescope has delivered an incredible new image of the spiral galaxy IC 1954, located approximately 45 million light years from Earth in the Horologium constellation, also known as The Clock. Seen at a diagonal tilt, IC 1954's bright core and sweeping spiral arms give it the appearance of a cosmic pendulum. This galaxy is filled with star-forming regions, visible as glowing pink patches in the image, offering a deeper insight into the formation of stars within galaxies.

Combined data from three advanced telescopes

The new observations of IC 1954 significantly improve upon earlier images. The inclusion of H-alpha data, highlighted by red regions in the image, marks the areas where hydrogen is abundant and stars are actively forming. These glowing areas, spread across the galaxy's disc, were explained by the European Space Agency (ESA) in a statement. They mentioned that some astronomers suggest the bright ‘bar' across the galaxy could be an energetic star-forming zone positioned over the galactic centre.

The remarkable detail in the image was made possible by the combined efforts of three powerful telescopes. Alongside the Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Chile also contributed to this observation.

Together, these instruments are studying over fifty nearby galaxies, offering a comprehensive view across radio, infrared, optical, and ultraviolet wavelengths. This data is essential for understanding how matter moves through interstellar dust and gases in galaxies, aiding in the understanding of galaxy evolution.

The ESA also highlighted the importance of Hubble's ultraviolet and optical capabilities in observing young stars and clusters. These wavelengths capture the most active periods of star formation. The data gathered by Hubble will be instrumental in furthering research on how stars evolve, building on the foundation set by the James Webb Space Telescope's ongoing science missions.

Strange Fish Species Might Be Able to Taste Using Its Crab-Like Legs, Study Claims

The northern sea robin (Prionotus carolinus) is an intriguing marine species known for its remarkable adaptations. Unlike most fish, this species employs its six leg-like appendages to navigate the ocean floor. This ability allows it not only to move but also to explore the sea bed in search of food. While this capability was long known in the scientific community, another strange use case of its leg was recently discovered.

Sensory Capabilities of Sea Robins

Recent studies have illuminated how these legs function as sensory organs. Researchers observed that the northern sea robin is capable of detecting buried prey through chemical cues released into the water. Using its shovel-like feet, the fish can unearth hidden food sources, demonstrating a unique blend of mobility and sensory detection.

Research Collaboration and Findings

A collaborative research effort involving developmental biologist David Kingsley from Stanford University and molecular biologist Nicholas Bellono from Harvard University examined the sea robin's sensory adaptations. The study was published in the journal Current Biology. Their experiments placed the fish in environments with buried mussels and amino-acid capsules. The results confirmed the fish's efficiency in locating and retrieving these hidden items, thanks to the specialized bumps on its legs, known as papillae, which house taste receptors.

Evolutionary Insights into Adaptation

The evolutionary background of the northern sea robin reveals an intriguing narrative. An evolutionary analysis of various sea robin species indicated that while the legs initially developed for locomotion, their sensory capabilities evolved later. The researchers identified the tbx3a gene as a key factor in the development of these legs, and using CRISPR technology, they demonstrated that altering this gene can impact both leg formation and sensory function.

Conclusion: Implications of the Research

The findings from this research not only enhance our understanding of the northern sea robin but also provide broader insights into how species adapt over time. By exploring the genetic and evolutionary pathways that led to such unique adaptations, scientists can better understand the complexities of marine life and the evolutionary processes that shape it.

James Webb Space Telescope Finds Distant Galaxy That May Hold Clues to Early Universe

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has once again made a ground-breaking discovery— a distant galaxy that could hold the key to unlocking how the universe evolved in its earliest stages. Detected roughly one billion years after the Big Bang, this galaxy presents a fascinating glimpse into a period when stars and galaxies were just beginning to form. It is said that this dust cloud exists between fully formed galaxy where stars outweigh the gases, and whatever came before the Big Bang event.

A Galaxy Like No Other

One of the most intriguing aspects of this newly discovered galaxy is how its gas clouds outshine the stars. This rare phenomenon has caught the attention of astronomers, as it suggests conditions in the early universe might have been different than previously thought. Typically, stars shine brighter than surrounding gas, but in this case, the gas is so luminous that it dominates the galaxy's light profile.

This odd trait might offer clues about how stars interacted with their environment during this period of cosmic history. The study detailing the discovery has been published in the October issue of Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Unusually Hot Stars

In addition to its bright gas clouds, the galaxy also hosts stars much hotter than those found in more modern galaxies. These stars, despite their extreme heat, contain heavier elements, unlike the very first stars in the universe, which were made mostly of hydrogen and helium. This discovery could provide crucial insights into how the universe transitioned from its first, simple stars to the more complex stellar systems we observe today.

Rewriting Cosmic History

With the advanced observational power of the James Webb Telescope, scientists can now look further back into the universe's past than ever before. This galaxy represents just one of many discoveries expected to reshape our understanding of early cosmic evolution. As researchers continue to explore galaxies from this period, they hope to piece together how stars, galaxies, and other cosmic structures emerged from the chaos of the early universe.

Apple Must Face Narrowed Privacy Lawsuit Over Its Apps

A federal judge narrowed a lawsuit accusing Apple of violating the privacy of iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch users by collecting their personal data through proprietary apps such as the App Store, Apple Music and Apple TV.

U.S. District Judge Edward Davila in San Jose, California, dismissed nearly all claims based on the "Allow Apps to Request to Track" setting on Apple mobile devices, but let some claims proceed over the "Share [Device] Analytics" setting.

Mobile device users said Apple violated their user agreements and several privacy and consumer protection laws by assuring that disabling the settings would limit its collection, storage and use of their data - only to then ignore their choices and collect, store and use that data.

The lawsuit seeking unspecified damages is one of many accusing technology companies such as Apple, Alphabet's Google and Meta Platforms' Facebook of allowing the collection of user data without consent.

In a 39-page decision late Thursday, Davila said Apple made clear to users that the "Allow Apps to Request to Track" setting applied to "other companies' apps and websites."

He said that made it "implausible" for reasonable people to believe that by turning the setting off, they were withdrawing consent for Apple to collect their data through its own apps.

But the judge said users plausibly alleged they withdrew such consent by disabling the "Share [Device] Analytics" setting, citing Apple's disclosure that users may "disable the sharing of Device Analytics altogether."

The Cupertino, California-based company has said it collects data through that setting to improve its products and services.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Friday. Apple and its lawyers did not immediately respond to similar requests.

The case is In re Apple Data Privacy Litigation, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 22-07069.

Love, Sitara Review: A Well-Intended but Lukewarm Take on Dysfunctional Families

Love, Sitara opens with a Kerala wedding, with Sobhita Dhulipala's Tara in the middle of an unabashed introduction to her dysfunctional family. Outwardly portraying a delusionally happy picture of an ideal bunch, Tara's family has perfected the art of casually masking the truth. It is a typical toxic Indian family that runs on hypocrisy and harbours several hushed secrets, enough to tear it apart.

Tara isn't exactly leading a perfect sticking-to-the-plan life herself, though. In the second scene itself we find her panicking in a clinic after finding out that she is pregnant, appalled at the discovery that contraception works only 95 percent of the time. Flooded with emotions, she makes an impromptu marriage proposal to her chef boyfriend, Arjun (Rajeev Siddhartha), with whom she shares a turbulent romantic history – conveniently hiding the truth about her pregnancy. The couple decides to have their wedding at Tara's childhood home in Kerala the same month. Thus begins a complicated circus of secrets, sleuthing, and moulding truths.

The flawed romance here isn't just restricted to the lead pair. Every romantic relationship in the film is flawed. The house helps are wedded off to drunkards and favourite aunts are wrapped in illicit affairs with married men. The film presents a disturbing array of inappropriate couples, laying bare the sad reality of a lot of Indian marriages.

Love, Sitara is a satirical mockery of romantic relationships. It exposes the faults straightaway, without beating around the bush much. The film excels in exposing the hypocrisy that pervades society, where people publicly condemn others for the very same secrets they hide themselves. With unflinching honesty, Love, Sitara reveals the flaws and double standards that often underline our most intimate connections.

What I particularly liked was director Vandana Kataria's attempt at a balanced portrayal of traditionalism and modernity. It is one of the few recent films where the two co-exist and point out the very awkwardness of this paradoxical existence. It doesn't justify the modern hookup culture but questions the traditional marriage set up, as well. The film also steers clear from a stereotypical representation of Malayali households in North Indian cinema, where you see homes reduced to extended temples with rooms.

As for performances, Dhulipala has done a decent job at portraying a flawed, messed up, and selfish woman who cannot get her priorities straight. Tara isn't written in a way that'll move you or make you feel sorry for her and her self-invited troubles, but is a nice break from the stereotypical extremes of women represented on screen. You won't feel much sympathy for her, but that's perhaps the whole point.

Siddhartha and Virginia Rodrigues, however, give the best performances of them all. The two actors bring a calming presence to the otherwise chaotic lives around them. Their poise, as opposed to the hypocrites around them, is enjoyable and delightful. Siddhartha's cooking sequences are cathartic, and Rodrigues' composure in how she handles things is a highlight. Even though the screenplay doesn't offer much room to the two for a multi-layered performance, they shine in their roles.

Love, Sitara intends well and starts strong, but somewhat lacks in its overall execution. The themes of hypocrisy, facade, and infidelity are all touched upon, but the film skirts around the impact these might have on characters and story. Though there are a few powerful scenes, including the one where Rodrigues' character has a nervous breakdown after a disturbing revelation, the momentum keeps ebbing away over time.

The dining table conversations are particularly hard to watch. The laughter feels forced and jokes miss the landing. They feel more like the early morning sessions of laughter yoga than a usual family dinner. Even though the film banks on families' pretentiousness, these fake bursts of laughter become too much to take.

Love, Sitara has all the ingredients of a good film on paper, with a perfect flavour of the traditional and the modern and how both remain deeply flawed, but it lacks a finishing touch. It ends up feeling like a good first draft for a film, which has the potential of translating into to something more challenging and complex, but is released in a rush with its half-cooked ideas, instead. The film conveniently skips on how ugly infidelity can get. While I understand that Kataria might have wanted to keep the film from being too heavy or seeming like moral lesson on monogamy, the narrative nevertheless could have been more compelling if it reckoned with the realities of the relationship issues it brings up.

Some of the tropes seem ill-fitted and act as unnecessary fillers for the storyline, scattered across the film for decorative purposes. For instance, Arjun's dad, a retired military officer, is little more than prop, who was added to the film just as another example of a dysfunctional relationship. He is there just to scorn, give disappointed looks to his son, and wear a pretentious badge of superiority. The film could have, honestly, done well without him, or at least given him a few more meaningful scenes to justify his presence.

Contrarily, some of the character tropes were wonderful in their little presence but heavily underutilized. B Jayashree, for instance, plays Tara's savage grandmother. She is unapologetically herself, loves scanning though newspapers for funny obituaries, and knows when to put her foot down. Jayashree is a joy to watch in each of her scenes. However, even though her character seems important at first, she soon takes a backseat unexpectedly; as if the director forgot about her.

Despite its shortcomings, however, Love, Sitara is a decent take on familial dysfunction in Indian families, that effectively contrasts old-school and modern relationships, while never favouring one over the other. It's a film that shows a mirror to the hypocritical standards of society, which bemoans the unstable, relationship-hopping culture of young people, and yet has been conveniently accommodating inappropriate relationships, if kept a secret. It exposes how the lustful fallacies plaguing humans have been well veneered beneath the mask of idealism.

If only the film didn't shy away from taking on its subject matter with a little more grit, it would have likely made it to the year's favourites list of a lot of cinephiles, including me. Sadly, that's not the case. While Love, Sitara might not be as good as it could have been, it is an honest attempt at portraying the evolving dimensions of love and relationships, even if it doesn't scratch beneath the surface.

India Reports First Case of Highly-Transmissible Mpox Clade 1b Variant in Kerala

India has recorded its first case of the new mpox strain, known as Clade 1b, in Kerala. This new strain is highly transmissible and has been connected to the mpox outbreak in Africa. The case involves a 38-year-old man from Kerala who recently returned from Dubai. Mpox, a contagious virus previously called monkeypox, causes painful skin lesions and can lead to serious health complications if left untreated.

Case details and response in Kerala

Manisha Verma, spokesperson for the Health Ministry, confirmed that the patient from Malappuram district has been diagnosed with the clade 1 strain. He is currently undergoing treatment in hospital. Health authorities are tracking and monitoring individuals in contact with the patient. This includes around 29 friends, family members, and 37 passengers who travelled with him on the same flight. So far, none of them have shown symptoms, according to local officials.

In the past two years, India has reported more than 30 mpox cases linked to the older, less infectious clade 2 strain. Earlier this month, another case of the new strain was detected in a man from Haryana, who has since been discharged after receiving treatment. The virus spreads through close human contact, including skin-to-skin contact, sexual activity, and respiratory droplets.

Government advisory and preventive measures

The federal government has issued an advisory urging all states to be on high alert for possible mpox cases. To aid in diagnosis, 35 laboratories have been set up across the country for testing. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further transmission.

iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 5 Update With Apple Intelligence in Messages and New Control Centre Toggles Released: What’s New

iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 5 was rolled out to eligible iPhone models on Monday. It builds upon the features introduced by Apple on the previous developer and public beta updates by adding new toggles in the Control Centre and an option to reset its layout to the default iOS configuration. Apple Intelligence — the company's suite of artificial intelligence (AI) features — is now available on the company's Messages app, adding new ways for quickly replying to chats and fetching summaries of messages.

iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 5 Update Features

One of the most notable highlights of the iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 5 update is the introduction of Apple Intelligence in Messages. iPhone users who are beta testing the latest build will be able to see a summary of each of their unread conversations. Meanwhile, a new smart replies option enables them to choose an appropriate quick response to messages.

The Cupertino-based tech giant has added a dedicated Apple Intelligence option in the Notes app. Following the update, users can now access AI-powered writing tools — such as proofreading and rewriting — without having to select the text and choosing the writing tools option from the floating menu.

The update also brings new dedicated toggles that can be added to the Control Centre. These include Wi-Fi and VPN toggles. If users do not like their custom layout of the Control Centre, they can reset it using a new setting which can be accessed by navigating to Settings and then Control Centre.

Apple has also expanded the availability of Rich Communication Services (RCS) messages with the iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 5 update. It is now supported for Telenet, Proximus and BASE telecommunications providers in Belgium, and TracFone and C Spire in the US. when using iPhone mirroring with a Mac, users will now be able to drag and drop files between devices, improving interoperability. However, this feature requires the iPhone and Mac to run on iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 5 and macOS Sequioa 15.1, respectively.

Other tweaks include a new dark mode icon for Apple Intelligence in settings, a reworked Apple Watch app icon, and other changes to the user interface (UI).

Nothing Ear Open Design, Key Specifications Leak Online Ahead of Launch

Nothing Ear Open, the rumoured open ear true wireless stereo (TWS) earphones from the company, are expected to launch later today. So far, the UK-based OEM has teased the arrival of an upcoming product but has yet to reveal any details. Design renders of the anticipated audio wearables alongside the expected key features have surfaced online. They are expected to maintain the brand-specific design language and carry larger batteries than most TWS earphones in the market. The earphones are also tipped to arrive with support for OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Nothing Ear Open Design (Expected)

Winfuture leaked (in German) the design of the purported open-ear TWS earphones from Nothing with a partially transparent design. They are seen with long, curved bands that are expected to help the earphones remain in place. The earphones appear in a white shade, placed in a pill-shaped charging and storage case.

Nothing Ear Open Features (Expected)

The Nothing Ear Open earphones will be equipped with 14.2mm titanium-coated polyethylene terephthalate driver each, according to the publication. They will also reportedly feature a "Bass Enhance" technology as well as dual device and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity. The touch sensors are said to be placed on the transparent portion of the earphones.

The report adds that Nothing Ear Open will likely be equipped with AI-backed Clear Voice technology, a low latency mode and an IP54-rated build for dust and splash resistance. Apple Could Introduce Apple Intelligence-Powered Siri With iOS 18.3 Update Early Next Year

Apple is expected to debut a new and smarter Siri powered by Apple Intelligence – its suite of artificial intelligence (AI) features for iPhone. According to a report, the new Siri might arrive with a version of the iOS 18 update sooner than anticipated. When introduced, it is speculated to join the Apple Intelligence features that are scheduled to be rolled out with the iOS 18.1 update next month, including writing tools and web page summarisation.

Apple Intelligence-Powered Siri

Apple previewed its in-development Apple Intelligence features at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 in June. While some of them have already been tested in developer and public beta updates, the new Siri remains elusive, despite the Cupertino-based tech giant rolling out its new user interface (UI). But that could change soon, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In his Power On newsletter, Gurman suggested that the new Siri's arrival could be sooner than previously expected. Apple is expected to roll it out with the iOS 18.3 update rather than iOS 18.4. The development of this update may be completed by the end of the year, with its release being tipped for January 2025.

However, only some of Siri's features could be rolled out with iOS 18.3, with Apple keeping some in consideration for the iOS 18.4 update which is scheduled to be released sometime in March next year.

Siri Upgrades

According to Apple, one of the most notable additions to Siri is contextual understanding. Apple's voice assistant will be able to understand natural language and vaguely spoken sentences to find the underlying meaning behind them, leveraging the company's AI model. Additionally, it will also be integrated with various native Apple apps, being capable of taking action within the apps via verbal prompts.

Following the iOS 18 update, Siri also has a new UI. Upon activation, the screen glows around the edges. Additionally, users can now also take advantage of the Type to Siri feature which accepts text prompts in addition to voice commands.

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE Price Leaked; Tipped to Be More Expensive Than Galaxy S23 FE

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE is expected to launch soon as a successor to the Galaxy S23 FE, which was unveiled in October 2023. Previously, design leaks of the purported Fan Edition phone had surfaced online. Several key features of the smartphone including chipset and display have also been leaked. Meanwhile, a recent leak had suggested that the Galaxy S24 FE may launch at a higher price than the Galaxy S23 FE in European markets. Now, a new report claims that phone's price will likely follow a similar trend in the US.

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE Price (Expected)

The Samsung Galaxy S24 FE may launch in the US with a higher price tag than the Galaxy S23 FE. A Smartprix report in collaboration with tipster Steve H.McFly (@OnLeaks) suggests that the anticipated Galaxy S24 FE will likely start in the US at $649 (roughly Rs. 54,200) for the 128GB option, while the 256GB variant will be listed at $709 (roughly Rs. 59,200). Notably, this is a $50 (roughly Rs. 4,200) jump over the Galaxy S23 FE launch price, which started at $599 (roughly Rs. 50,000).

An earlier leak claimed that the 8GB + 128GB option of the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE could be priced at EUR 799 (roughly Rs. 74,100) in select European countries, which is a EUR 100 (roughly Rs. 9,200) hike over the price of its predecessor.

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE Features (Expected)

The Samsung Galaxy S24 FE is tipped to sport a 6.7-inch full-HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 1,900 nits of peak brightness level, and Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection. The phone could be backed by an Exynos 2400e chipset and a 4,565mAh battery with support for 25W wired and 15W wireless charging. For optics, it may carry a 50-megapixel triple rear camera unit and a 10-megapixel selfie shooter.

Previous leaks suggest that the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE will likely have a design similar to the preceding variant. It is tipped to get an aluminium middle frame and a glass rear panel. The phone may launch in five colour options — Blue, Green, Graphite, Silver/White, and Yellow.

SpaceX Crew-9 Mission Launch Delayed to September 26 for Final Preparations

The launch of SpaceX Crew-9, a significant mission to the International Space Station (ISS), has been delayed to September 26, 2024. This change allows teams to complete final prelaunch procedures and ensure all equipment is prepared. The delay also accounts for weather conditions and other prelaunch checks. The launch, initially set for August 18, will now occur no earlier than 2:05 p.m. EDT (1805 GMT) from Space Launch Complex-40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

Mission Details and Crew

SpaceX Crew-9 is now scheduled to carry only two astronauts: NASA astronaut and U.S. Space Force commander Nick Hague, and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov. Hague is set to become the first active Space Force Guardian to fly into space.

Originally, the mission was to include NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Stephanie Wilson, but their seats will be occupied by mass simulators. Cardman and Wilson will be considered for future missions to the ISS.

Impact of the Delay

The delay follows issues with Boeing's Starliner spacecraft, which affected the planned return of ISS astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams. The astronauts, who arrived at the ISS aboard Starliner, will now return to Earth on SpaceX Crew Dragon. This adjustment ensures that their return is managed safely and effectively.

The Crew-9 mission's delay provides NASA with the necessary time to ensure that all systems are functioning properly and that the launch will proceed smoothly.

Looking Ahead

The new launch date allows for better preparation and ensures that Crew-9's mission objectives are met. With Crew-9 set to arrive at the ISS, the spacecraft will also provide a return route for the Starliner astronauts. This adjustment highlights the ongoing efforts to maintain ISS operations and crew rotations, ensuring that the space station remains fully operational and continues to support scientific research and international collaboration.

Elon Musk’s Starlink Satellites Could Severely Damage Ground-Based Radio Telescopes, Says Study

Elon Musk's Starlink satellites are causing significant disruption for astronomers worldwide. Scientists from the Netherlands, particularly the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON), have reported that the growing network of Starlink satellites is interfering with radio waves used for vital space research. The satellites, designed to provide high-speed internet in remote areas across the globe, are blocking signals that allow astronomers to observe deep space objects, including black holes, exoplanets, and galaxies millions of light-years away.

Impact on Astronomical Research

According to Professor Jessica Dempsey, Director of ASTRON, the interference from Starlink's second-generation satellites (V2) is much stronger than the earlier versions. She highlighted that the electromagnetic radiation emitted by these satellites is up to 32 times stronger than what was detected from previous models, making it increasingly difficult for scientists to gather important data.

The satellites, currently orbiting Earth at around 550 kilometres above the surface, are creating substantial noise in the radio spectrum, blinding radio telescopes from capturing faint signals from space. This unintended interference is threatening the ability to explore and study distant cosmic phenomena.

Scientists Urge Action from SpaceX

There are currently over 6,400 Starlink satellites in orbit, with numbers expected to surpass 100,000 by 2030. This rapid growth has raised concerns among astronomers. Cees Bassa, lead author of a study on Starlink's effects, likened the radiation from the satellites to the brightness of the full Moon, drastically overpowering the faint stars astronomers aim to observe. Robert Massey, Deputy Executive Director of the Royal Astronomical Society in the UK, emphasised the urgency of addressing this issue, calling for SpaceX to take immediate action.

Astronomers suggest that simple steps, such as shielding the satellite batteries or improving the design to reduce radiation emissions, could significantly mitigate the interference. Without such measures, they warn that ground-based astronomy could face severe limitations, making it harder to study the universe.

Professor Dempsey noted that the situation is an existential threat to astronomical research if left unresolved. Scientists believe that as the largest satellite provider, SpaceX could set a precedent for responsible space operations.

Jupiter-Like Exoplanet With Iron Winds and Molten Metal Rain Discovered by Researchers

Astronomers have discovered that the exoplanet WASP-76b, located about 634 light-years away in the Pisces constellation, experiences extreme weather conditions unlike anything on Earth. With temperatures soaring to around 4,350 degrees Fahrenheit (2,400 degrees Celsius), the planet's atmosphere is ravaged by high-speed iron winds and molten metal rain. These findings highlight how truly alien the atmospheres of exoplanets can be, especially on "hot Jupiters" like WASP-76b.

Unique Atmospheric Phenomena

The exoplanet's close proximity to its star makes it tidally locked, meaning one side of WASP-76b is permanently facing the star. This dayside reaches extreme temperatures that vaporize iron, which is then carried to the planet's cooler nightside by powerful winds. Once there, the iron condenses and falls as molten metal droplets, creating an intense and hostile environment.

The discovery was made by a team of scientists from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and the PlanetS National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR PlanetS), led by Ana Rita Costa Silva, a doctoral student at the Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço.

New Insights into Exoplanetary Climates

Using the ESPRESSO instrument on the Very Large Telescope (VLT), the team was able to observe and measure the iron winds in the planet's atmosphere. Christophe Lovis, an astronomer with UNIGE, noted that ESPRESSO's precision allowed the team to gather detailed information on WASP-76b's dynamic processes. The new findings will help scientists create 3D climate models, offering a better understanding of planetary climates beyond our solar system.

In conclusion, WASP-76b continues to reveal extraordinary details about exoplanet atmospheres, providing valuable insights into the weather patterns on planets outside our solar system. The discovery of iron winds and molten metal rain deepens our understanding of "hot Jupiter" planets, offering new perspectives on how extreme planetary climates can be.

Hacker Uses Telegram Chatbots to Leak Data of Star Health Insurance

Stolen customer data including medical reports from India's biggest health insurer, Star Health, is publicly accessible via chatbots on Telegram, just weeks after Telegram's founder was accused of allowing the messenger app to facilitate crime.

The purported creator of the chatbots told a security researcher, who alerted Reuters to the issue, that private details of millions of people were for sale and that samples could be viewed by asking the chatbots to divulge.

Star Health and Allied Insurance, whose market capitalization exceeds $4 billion, in a statement to Reuters said it has reported alleged unauthorized data access to local authorities. It said an initial assessment showed "no widespread compromise" and that "sensitive customer data remains secure".

Using the chatbots, Reuters was able to download policy and claims documents featuring names, phone numbers, addresses, tax details, copies of ID cards, test results and medical diagnoses.

The ability for users to create chatbots is widely credited with helping Dubai-based Telegram become one of the world's biggest messenger apps with 900 million active monthly users.

However, the arrest of Russian-born founder Pavel Durov in France last month has increased scrutiny of Telegram's content moderation and features open to abuse for criminal ends. Durov and Telegram denied wrongdoing and are addressing the criticism.

The use of Telegram chatbots to sell stolen data demonstrates the difficulty the app has in preventing nefarious agents taking advantage of its technology and highlights the challenges Indian companies face in keeping their data safe.

The Star Health chatbots feature a welcome message stating they are "by xenZen" and have been operational since at least Aug. 6, said UK-based security researcher Jason Parker.

Parker said he posed as a potential buyer on a online hacker forum where a user under the alias xenZen said they made the chatbots and possessed 7.24 terabytes of data related to over 31 million Star Health customers. The data is free via the chatbot on a random, piecemeal basis, but for sale in bulk form.

Reuters could neither independently verify xenZen's claims nor ascertain how the chatbot creator obtained the data. In an email to Reuters, xenZen said they were in discussions with buyers without disclosing who or why they were interested.

Taken Down

In testing the bots, Reuters downloaded more than 1,500 files with some documents dated as recently as July 2024.

"If this bot gets taken down watch out and another one will be made available in few hours," the welcome message read.

The chatbots were later marked "SCAM" with a stock warning that users had reported them as suspect. Reuters shared details of the chatbots with Telegram on Sept. 16 and within 24 hours spokesperson Remi Vaughn said they had been "taken down" and asked to be informed should more appear.

"The sharing of private information on Telegram is expressly forbidden and is removed whenever it is found. Moderators use a combination of proactive monitoring, AI tools and user reports to remove millions of pieces of harmful content each day."

New chatbots have since appeared offering Star Health data.

Star Health said an unidentified person contacted it on Aug. 13 claiming to have access to some of its data. The insurer reported the matter to the cybercrime department of its home state of Tamil Nadu and federal cyber security agency CERT-In.

"The unauthorized acquisition and dissemination of customer data is illegal, and we are actively working with law enforcement to address this criminal activity. Star Health assures its customers and partners that their privacy is of paramount importance to us," it said in its statement.

In an Aug. 14 stock exchange filing, Star Health, India's biggest player among standalone health insurance providers, said it was investigating an alleged breach of "a few claims data".

Representatives for CERT-In and the Tamil Nadu cybercrime department did not respond to emailed requests for comment.

Unaware

Telegram allows individuals or organizations to store and share large amounts of data behind anonymous accounts. It also lets them create customizable chatbots which automatically provide content and features based on user requests.

Two chatbots distribute Star Health data. One offers claim documents in PDF format. The other allows users to request up to 20 samples from 31.2 million datasets with a single click giving details including policy number, name and even body mass index.

Among documents disclosed to Reuters were records related to the treatment of the one-year-old daughter of policyholder Sandeep TS at a hospital in the southern state of Kerala. The records included diagnosis, blood test results, medical history and a bill of nearly 15,000 rupees ($179).

"It sounds concerning. Do you know how this can affect me?" said Sandeep, confirming the documents' authenticity. He said Star Health had not notified him of any data leak.

The chatbot also leaked a claim last year by policyholder Pankaj Subhash Malhotra which included ultrasound imaging test results, details of illness and copies of federal tax account and national ID cards. He also confirmed the documents were genuine and said he was not made aware of any security breach.

The Star Health chatbots are part of a broader trend of hackers using such methods to sell stolen data. Of five million people whose data was sold via chatbots, India represented the largest number of victims at 12%, showed the latest survey on the epidemic conducted by NordVPN at the end of 2022.

"The fact that sensitive data is available via Telegram is natural, because Telegram is an easy-to-use storefront," said NordVPN cybersecurity expert Adrianus Warmenhoven. "Telegram has become an easier to use method for criminals to interact."

Qualcomm Said to Have Approached Intel About a Takeover in Recent Days

Qualcomm has in recent days approached Intel to explore a potential acquisition of the troubled chipmaker, a source familiar with the situation said on Friday, in what could be a transformational deal in the sector but faces many hurdles.

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon is personally involved in the negotiations to acquire five-decade-old Intel, according to the source who was briefed on the matter. Another person familiar with the situation said Amon has been actively examining various options for a deal for the company.

Earlier this month, Reuters reported that Qualcomm explored the possibility of acquiring portions of Intel's design business and that its PC design unit was of particular interest. Qualcomm executives were examining Intel's entire portfolio of businesses.

The conversations with Intel are at an early stage. The San Diego-based company has not made a formal offer for Intel, according to third person familiar with the matter.

The sources requested anonymity as the discussions are confidential.

Intel declined to comment. Qualcomm did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Intel's shares closed up 3.3%, while Qualcomm fell 2.9%.

The approach by Qualcomm comes at a moment of weakness for Intel, which was once the most valuable chipmaker in the world, but whose shares have lost nearly 60% of their value since the start of the year.

A deal, should it go ahead, would likely invite scrutiny from antitrust regulators in the United States, China and Europe. Qualcomm may be required to divest parts of Intel in order to gain regulatory approvals.

A bid would mark the biggest takeover attempt in the technology industry since Broadcom sought to buy Qualcomm for $142 billion in 2018, before President Donald Trump nixed the tie-up, citing national security risks.

Reuters could not determine how Qualcomm, which has a market value of $188 billion, would finance a bid for Intel, which is valued at $122 billion, including its debt.

Qualcomm has roughly $13 billion in cash, according to recent company filings.

It is also unclear how Qualcomm would handle the takeover of Intel's contract manufacturing business. To build chips with an atomic level of precision, Intel has invested hundreds of billions of dollars over decades on its fabrication process and amassed tens of thousands of engineers to do it.

Qualcomm has never operated a chip factory, or fab, and currently contracts the likes of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co and uses designs and other technology supplied by Arm Holdings.

Intel's Woes

Once the dominant force in chipmaking, Intel ceded its manufacturing edge to Taiwanese rival TSMC and failed to produce a widely desired chip for the generative AI boom capitalized on by Nvidia and AMD.

Intel has been attempting to turn its business around by focusing on AI processors and creating a chip contract manufacturing business, known as a foundry.

As part of a memo from CEO Pat Gelsinger, Intel released a series of announcements that stemmed from a board meeting last week. Gelsinger and other executives presented a plan to shave off businesses and restructure the company, Reuters has previously reported.

The company plans to pause construction on factories in Poland and Germany, and reduce its real estate holdings. Intel also said it had reached a deal to make a custom networking chip for Amazon.com's AWS.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Qualcomm's talks with Intel earlier on Friday.
